PORTAL series

This entire series of work started with a photographic image of my great-grandmother standing in her doorway, in Barnack, near Stamford in Lincolnshire. I focussed on the dingy doorway because for some while I assumed it must be the entrance to an outhouse, but, having tracked down her tiny terraced house, it shocked me to realise it was her back door.

The darkness through the door must be filled with personality and detail ~ completely lost now. Doorways are one of our simplest metaphors. Traffic is in two directions. Every big shift or decision anyone makes involves the transit through one final life-changing doorway, into or out of a room, building, airport, hospital.

I gave Roseanna a hobbit house but a wide landscape full of possibilities and freedoms.
