Portraits

Currently I'm playing around with the idea of bringing a series of very diverse portraits into one body of work. The self portrait here is composed of one image, but capturing my head in two visible positions. The portrait of my son is almost life-size. It uses a great deal of collage material, and photographs of him taken over two or three years, so that in the end the portrait captures his passage from adolescent into young man. The photograph taken in Rome - well, I was drawn to the heavy overlaying of such different moments of both time and culture: the column on the Benetton store is ancient, the reflection of the Trevi fountain merges with the 'sale' signs in the shop window, and the young woman with the veil in the foreground rather soberly feeds her boyfriend ice-cream.
